More reading of Neusner's The Way of Torah Neusner provides a passionate and powerful argument for rabbinic Judaism here. It is a bare overview, however.
His notions around the nature of ritual and the demand for a changed and ethical life as integral to proper Judaism are fascinating, as they derive, in part, from a reaction to Christianity (in my judgment).
I will probably pick up one or two of Herschel's books in the spring.
